DANCE WORKSHOP
Sometimes there are landscapes that even look like choreographies!…
If a landscape can be like a choreography, then I can move like a river, or our bodies together can move like a glacier. If time passes too quickly, then I can trick it and move very slowly, like those nimble-legged insects that walk on water. If time passes too slowly, then I can set it up and jump around so frantically that time will get so tired that it will need to go by quickly in order to rest.
Sometimes there are choreographies that even look like landscapes!…
Through the exploration of movement and choreographic composition games, developed 2 by 2 and in groups, we will investigate the relationship between the body and each other, with space, time, rhythm and dynamics. We’ll create small and large dances in which all can be dancers and choreographers.
This workshop also reflects on the intrinsic relation between body, space and time, central elements in Maria Ramos’ research on choreography as landscape in action.
Maria Ramos is a dance artist based in Lisbon. She grew up in the western Algarve and it was in Lagos and Lisbon that she began studying dance and theatre.
Between 1996 and 2009 she lived in Holland where she studied and developed her professional career as a dancer, working with various choreographers in Holland and also in Germany, UK and the USA, including choreographer/director Angus Balbernie.
In her path as a choreographer, Maria has developed the concept of choreography as landscape in action, which explores dance as a sensory immersion where body, space and environment are interconnected. In this concept, the landscape is seen as an active element that shapes and is shaped by the body in movement, creating a choreographic experience that reflects the interaction between human beings and their environment.
In the context of her choreographic work, she has been invited to teach at the Conservatório das Artes da Madeira, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Glasgow Contemporary Art Centre, The North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford, Espacio LEM (Buenos Aires), and has developed several dance workshops for children, youths and adults in various national Theatres.
Alongside her research and creative work, she teaches regularly at Forum Dança, at the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design and at the Escola Superior de Dança.
