Beyond the physical, chemical, and mystical processes that take place in the brain, it is not entirely clear what truly lies within. Some claim that the brain controls the body, while others insist, “No! It’s the body that dictates everything!” Thought, language, imagination, sensation, perception, balance, posture, breathing, heartbeat rhythm, blood pressure, learning, memory… phew… how can so much fit inside if the head is so small? But Inside the head, there’s also the nose and the mouth – with a tongue inside… oh, and the eyes… phew! And the ears too. So much packed in!
How are we going to fit all of this into a single performance? It seems like an impossible task. Let’s get to work!

Márcia Lança was born in Beja and lives in Lisbon. In 2008, she founded VAGAR, of which she is artistic director. She has worked as a choreographer and performer in various collaborative settings. Her practice moves in territories where the boundaries between the fictional and the real are thin and blurred. Her interest in the poetic materiality of concrete actions and tasks lies at the heart of her creative processes. She is passionate about emerging collective compositions, thinking as action, and situated constructions.
She has been practising Lotus Flower Kung Fu with Guilherme Luz since 2008. She is one of João Fiadeiro’s closest collaborators, alongside Carolina Campos and Daniel Pizamiglio, in the development of Real-Time Composition since 2003.
Márcia created Cavala, Dentro da Cabeça, É Só um Dia, Outro lado é um dia, Dentro do Coração, NOME, Por esse Mundo Fora, Evidências Suficientes para a Não Coerência do Mundo, Happiness and Misery, 9 Possible Portraits, O Desejo Ignorante, Trompe le Monde, Morning Sun, and Dos joelhos para baixo.
She actively develops research and artistic creation workshops for children and occasionally teaches classes on imagined anatomy, collective bodies and collaborative processes.
